Meet Jasmine, a New Ventures Implementer
Meet Jasmine Hum, a New Ventures Implementer in the St. Lawrence District. Implementers like Jasmine are the people on the New Ventures team who are responsible to oversee the new things God is doing in specific regions across Canada.
Hailing from the West Island of Montreal, Jasmine and her husband Michael live in Rosemère, Quebec, with their three daughters. The Hums first stepped into full-time ministry in 2016 at Cobourg Alliance Church, their home church in the years they called Ontario home. During that time, their passion to see new expressions of church in Canada deepened.
Jasmine knows the New Ventures space well. In 2019, sensing a call to discern next steps, both she and Michael joined New Ventures as Apprentices. As part of her apprenticeship, Jasmine even served in communications with New Ventures!
Following months of discernment and prayer as Apprentices, the Hums took their next steps of obedience: moving back to Quebec, to join the staff of The180 Church, in Laval. The180, once a New Venture, launched as a church in 2017 to provide a safe space to ask questions about faith in a province with a complex religious history.
Uprooting their young family was daunting, but Jasmine sensed a lot of confirmation.
"When we lived in Ontario, I knew, deep down, that I eventually wanted to come back to Montreal, but I didn't know how this would materialize," she shares. "In a way, when this opportunity came up, it was an easy decision. There were a lot of questions, especially about the ways a move would affect our kids who were so settled and happy in Ontario. We came to the conclusion that we didn't have all the answers, we couldn't map this all out—but this felt like the right move. And we prayed we would see this in our kids."
The move ended up being delayed after the pandemic hit, but the Hums eventually made it to Rosemère. And God generously answered their prayers:
"The kids settled flawlessly in Montreal–they made friends, and they love being here. We felt so welcomed by the church, even though it was the pandemic at the time! God’s hand was in all of this… He was so careful with every detail, and showed us again and again He would provide at every step."
At The180, Michael serves as the Associate Pastor, while Jasmine oversees communications and graphics.
As she continues serving in her local church, Jasmine is now following Jesus’ lead in a new role at the district level. As a New Ventures Implementer for the St. Lawrence District, Jasmine will help equip New Ventures and Discerning Communities launching in Quebec, network and engage with Quebecois churches and leaders, and identify people in the province who are discerning their next steps in ministry.
Jasmine reflects, “I have forever felt this stirring in my heart for ministry. This role is everything I want to be apart of.”
Asking “Who is Jesus calling to join Him at work in Quebec?” and “What are the new things God is doing here?” as her guiding questions, Jasmine hopes to leverage her own experience of God’s provision and leading when walking with others in the St. Lawrence District.
“I’m really hopeful for Quebec and the Church here, because there’s a possibility of new things. There are new leaders, and they just need coaching and support. I am excited to help empower them. That’s what this is about. The future feels so bright!”
If you are wondering about what it would look like to start something new in the province of Quebec, Jasmine is the person to talk to!
Other key things to know about Jasmine, you ask? She loves spending time with Michael and their girls, doing DIY projects, renovating, and gardening when the Montreal weather allows!
